La vita

Amie Lin è un’artista visiva originaria di Taiwan (classe 1978); dopo diversi anni vissuti negli Stati Uniti, a New York, si è trasferita in Germania, a Berlino, dove attualmente vive e lavora come artista e creative director. Cresciuta a cavallo tra l'Oriente e l'Occidente, ha coltivato un punto di vista che abbraccia entrambi i mondi: “Il mio background dicotomico mi permette di filtrare ed esaminare temi contemporanei come l'immigrazione, la segregazione e la discriminazione con oggettività binaria”. Oltre alla creazione artistica e in particolare alla pittura, Amie coltiva numerose passioni: i viaggi, la scrittura (anche poetica) e la musica (in particolare il violoncello). La sua è un’anima decisamente curiosa e sempre aperta agli altri: “Adoro immergermi in nuove culture, sperimentare lo stile di vita locale, mangiare ciò che mangia la gente del posto e condividere storie che rivelano da una parte tutte le nostre piccole differenze e dall’altra invece l’uniformità che lega tutti noi esseri umani”.

La poetica

L’arte di Amie ruota attorno ai temi della razza, della migrazione, dello spostamento e dell'identità. Il suo processo creativo spesso comporta la traduzione di un evento o di un soggetto in una narrazione coesa, che poi si manifesta sotto forma di disegni, dipinti e occasionalmente sculture. Il suo lavoro varia nel mezzo, tuttavia, tende a incorporare nella composizione strati di simbolismo. Un motivo che attualmente ricorre nel suo lavoro è l'eclissi solare, a simboleggiare una sorta di separazione tra inclusione ed esclusione e su dove ci vediamo all'interno di questo spettro. La serie "Holding Spaces" è composta principalmente da una grande eclissi solare creata stampando ripetutamente un simbolo su un grande foglio di carta: “Dal momento che il lavoro richiede un'immensa concentrazione si è sviluppato anche in una forma di meditazione per me. In un certo senso, è anche arte performativa e sono aperta al fatto che gli spettatori mi guardino mentre creo”. 

L’opera a Castagno

“Considerando il murale, era della massima importanza per me che fosse qualcosa che i residenti di Castagno avrebbero trovato piacevole. Non vorrei mai creare qualcosa che risulti invadente. Questo è il loro villaggio, di cui ci hanno generosamente permesso di far parte per un breve periodo di tempo. Voglio fare tutto ciò che è in mio potere per essere il più rispettosa e cortese possibile nell'onorare questo bellissimo villaggio. Vorrei lasciare qualcosa di non solo bello ma anche significativo per questo posto speciale”. Transmigration è un murale monocromatico che descrive la storia della trasformazione di una giovane donna attraverso la sua Residenza a Castagno. La narrazione è profondamente personale e contiene icone simboliche sotto forma di creature stravaganti, che rappresentano tutti gli incontri straordinari che Amie ha avuto durante il suo viaggio. Il muro funge anche da tributo speciale a suo padre, scomparso durante la sua Residenza d'Artista. La trasmigrazione (conosciuta anche come metempsicosi) è il processo in cui l'anima migra da un essere umano o animale a un altro corpo umano o animale dopo la morte. Trans significa "attraverso" e la migrazione è l'atto di muoversi, come gli uccelli che volano a sud: “Le idee per la migrazione sono state ispirate dalle rondini e dai rondoni che ogni anno compiono il loro volo annuale dall'Africa all'Italia durante la primavera per nidificare e accoppiarsi al sole della Toscana”. Al centro del murale è raffigurata la figura solitaria di una giovane donna che cade a capofitto in un buco buio e stellato. Piante e animali la circondano a ricordare Madre Natura che la osserva silenziosamente scendere. Un'eclissi lunare è sospesa direttamente sopra di lei, a simboleggiare la trasformazione cosmica e un catalizzatore per il cambiamento e il rinnovamento. Sulla sottile mezzaluna siede una lumaca "sinistra" o a spirale sinistra, molto rara, una presenza su un milione nei molluschi. A sinistra, un maiale con le ali, la più umile di tutte le creature, canta la sua ultima canzone. Accanto al maiale volante, da un "moncone" amputato inizia a germogliare una foglia. Questi due elementi sono un richiamo diretto alla figura del padre venuto a mancare: il ricordo di un affettuoso nomignolo e alla gamba amputata. In alto, una rondine con la coda a forbice piomba giù dal cielo, completando la sua migrazione annuale. Una farfalla dalla coda di rondine e con la testa di un coniglietto di Playboy fluttua con grazia lungo la collina. La farfalla richiama un evento avvenuto alla stessa artista durante la sua Residenza: mentre era intenta a lavorare, una farfalla si è posata sulla sua mano poco prima di avere la notizia della morte del padre, per questo per Amie potrebbe essersi trattato dell’anima di suo padre giunto ad avvertirla. A destra, un orso con un cilindro tiene in mano una grossa castagna. L’orso è un chiaro omaggio a Pistoia (l’orso è il micco, simbolo della città toscana, che tra l’altro troviamo nel formato di una piccola statua proprio di fronte alla parete dipinta da Amie) ma anche un richiamo alla sua attuale città di provenienza (Berlino), mentre la castagna simboleggia ovviamente il borgo di Castagno. Una nuvola scura incombe su di lui ornata da un rivestimento d'argento a voler ricordare che spesso qualcosa di spiacevole può però trasformarsi in un’opportunità positiva o che una tempesta passa sempre seguita dal sereno. Questo cielo muta sopra il paesaggio toscano, sullo sfondo lo skyline della città di Pistoia, poi le colline con il paese di Castagno e infine il mare (una dedica gentilmente richiesta dagli abitanti della casa davanti al murale che hanno una barca a vela). Il tableau stravagante può sembrare la scena di una fiaba per bambini, tuttavia, ogni elemento del murale illustra in realtà la storia personale dell'artista e la sua straordinaria esperienza a Castagno. Contemporaneamente, la storia riflette anche la narrativa universale del ciclo infinito dell'anima. L'artista spera che lo spettatore possa entrare nel portale stellato ed essere temporaneamente trasportato in un regno fantastico. Il murale è dipinto direttamente sulla parete utilizzando pennelli e pitture adatte alla tinteggiatura degli esterni degli edifici. Lo stile e la tavolozza dei colori sono ispirati alla serie "Blue Nudes" di Henri Matisse (creata dall’artista dopo l'intervento chirurgico per un cancro allo stomaco che lo aveva colpito, limitando le sue condizioni fisiche). Le forme solide sono audaci e grafiche, consentendo a ciascun elemento di comunicare come se fossero icone o simboli piuttosto che immagini. 

Curiosità: la prima idea dell’artista riguardava un’altra tematica, l’idea iniziale prima di arrivare a Castagno era infatti quella di realizzare a mano un grande quadro di rondini e rondoni, con inchiostro di gomma e inchiostro su carta, uno sciame di centinaia di uccelli a creare uno schema, dal titolo Murmuration: “Tuttavia, dopo aver appreso della ricca storia di Castagno e aver visto tutta la bella arte pubblica (affreschi, sculture, murales ecc.) realizzata da artisti in passato, ho deciso di creare qualcosa che sarebbe rimasto nel villaggio e che potesse essere goduto dal pubblico senza bisogno di un accesso speciale. Dopo qualche esitazione, ho trovato un grande muro dove avrei realizzato il mio murale. Purtroppo, alla fine della mia prima settimana a Castagno, ho ricevuto la notizia che mio padre era improvvisamente scomparso. Lasciai Castagno e volai subito in Asia per stare con la mia famiglia. Durante il periodo del lutto, sono stata ispirata dalla compassione che mi è stata mostrata da tutti gli abitanti. Per questo ho deciso di realizzare un murale che rappresentasse la mia esperienza a Castagno. Il lavoro è dedicato agli abitanti e allo stesso tempo è un omaggio al mio defunto padre”.

Biography

Amie Lin is a visual artist originally from Taiwan (born in 1978); she after several years living in the United States, in New York, she moved to Germany, in Berlin, where she currently lives and works as an artist and creative director. Growing up between East and West, she has cultivated a point of view that embraces both worlds: "My dichotomous background allows me to filter and examine contemporary issues such as immigration, segregation and discrimination with objectivity binary". In addition to artistic creation and in particular to painting, she Amie cultivates numerous passions: travel, writing (including poetry) and music (especially the cello). His is a decidedly curious soul and always open to others: "I love to immerse myself in new cultures, experience the local lifestyle, eat what the locals eat and share stories that reveal all our small differences and on the other hand, the uniformity that binds all of us human beings".

Philosophy

Amie's art revolves around the themes of race, migration, displacement and identity. Her creative process often involves translating an event or subject into a cohesive narrative, which then manifests itself in the form of drawings, paintings and occasionally sculptures. Her work varies in between, however, she tends to incorporate layers of symbolism into the composition. One motif that currently recurs in her work is the solar eclipse, symbolising a sort of separation between inclusion and exclusion and where we see ourselves within this spectrum. The "Holding Spaces" series is mainly composed of a large solar eclipse created by repeatedly printing a symbol on a large sheet of paper: “Since the work requires immense concentration it has also developed into a form of meditation for me. In a way, it's also a performative art and I'm open to having viewers watching me while I create”.

“Considering the mural, it was of the utmost importance to me that it was something the residents of Castagno would find enjoyable. I would never want to create something that is intrusive. This is their village, which they generously allowed us to be a part of for a short period of time. I want to do everything in my power to be as respectful and courteous as possible in honouring this beautiful village. I would like to leave something not only beautiful but also significant for this special place". Transmigration is a monochromatic mural depicting the story of a young woman's transformation through her Residence in Castagno. The narrative is deeply personal and contains symbolic icons in the form of whimsical creatures, representing all the extraordinary encounters Amie had on her journey. The wall also serves as a special tribute to her father, who passed away during her Artist's Residence. Transmigration (also known as metempsychosis) is the process in which the soul migrates from a human or animal to another human or animal body after death. Trans means "through" and migration is the act of moving, like birds flying south: “The ideas for migration were inspired by the swallows and swifts that make their annual flight from Africa to Africa each year. Italy during the spring to nest and mate in the Tuscan sun". In the center of the mural is the solitary figure of a young woman who falls headlong into a dark and starry hole. Plants and animals surround her to remember Mother Nature who silently watches her descend. A lunar eclipse hangs directly above her, symbolising cosmic transformation and a catalyst for change and renewal. On the thin crescent sits a very rare sinister spiral snail, one in a million molluscs. On the left, a pig with wings, the humblest of all creatures, sings her last song. Next to the flying pig, a leaf begins to sprout from an amputated "stump". These two elements are a direct reference to the figure of the father who passed away: the memory of an affectionate nickname and the amputated leg. Above, a scissor-tailed swallow swoops down from the sky, completing its annual migration. A swallow-tailed butterfly with a Playboy bunny head floats gracefully down the hill. The butterfly recalls an event that occurred to the artist herself during her residence: while she was busy working, a butterfly landed on her hand shortly before hearing the news of her father's death, which is why for Amie it could have been the soul of her father came to warn her. On the right, a bear with a top hat holds a large chestnut in his hand. The bear is a clear homage to Pistoia (the bear is the micco, symbol of the Tuscan city, which among other things we find in the format of a small statue right in front of the wall painted by Amie) but also a reference to its current city ​​of origin (Berlin), while the chestnut obviously symbolises the village of Castagno. A dark cloud hangs over him adorned with a silver lining as a reminder that often something unpleasant can, however, turn into a positive opportunity or that a storm always passes followed by the serene. This sky changes over the Tuscan landscape, in the background the skyline of the city of Pistoia, then the hills with the town of Castagno and finally the sea (a dedication kindly requested by the inhabitants of the house in front of the mural who have a sailboat). The whimsical tableau may look like a scene from a children's fairy tale, however, each element of the mural actually illustrates the artist's personal story and his extraordinary experience at Chestnut. At the same time, the story also reflects the universal narrative of the infinite cycle of the soul. The artist hopes that the viewer can enter the star portal and be temporarily transported to a fantasy realm. The mural is painted directly on the wall using brushes and paints suitable for painting the exterior of the buildings. The style and color palette are inspired by Henri Matisse's "Blue Nudes" series (created by the artist after surgery for stomach cancer that struck him, limiting his physical condition). The solid shapes are bold and graphic, allowing each element to communicate as if they were icons or symbols rather than images.

Curiosity: the artist's first idea concerned another theme, the initial idea before arriving in Castagno was in fact to create a large painting of swallows and swifts by hand, with rubber ink and ink on paper, a swarm of hundreds of birds to create a pattern, entitled Murmuration: "However, after learning about the rich history of Castagno and seeing all the beautiful public art (frescoes, sculptures, murals etc.) made by artists in the past, I decided to create something that would remain in the village and could be enjoyed by the public without the need for special access. After some hesitation, I found a large wall where I was going to make my mural. Unfortunately, at the end of my first week in Castagno, I received the news that my father had suddenly disappeared. I left Castagno and immediately flew to Asia to be with my family. During the mourning period, I was inspired by the compassion that was shown to me by all the inhabitants. This is why I decided to create a mural that would represent my experience in Castagno. The work is dedicated to the inhabitants and at the same time it is a tribute to my deceased father".
